SEAIA: The Southeast Asia Interest Association
Committees
For the 2007-08 academic year, SEAIA is organized into three committees, each charged with coordinating events and awareness in three different areas. To get more involved, feel free to drop by a weekly meeting or send an email to one of the committee co-chairs.
International Outreach
Spring 2008 meeting time: Thursdays @ 8pm, Student Union 2504
The IO Committee is working on creating awareness, interest, and activism on campus regarding current problems in Southeast Asia. This year's focus will be educating and promoting the rights of Burmese migrant workers and their children living in Thailand.
Cultural Events
Spring 2008 meeting time: Thursdays @ 6pm, Location TBA
Planned events include a Malaysian-Thai dinner at Penang restaurant in downtown Chapel Hill and a Thai cooking demonstration on campus. The Cultural Events seeks to increase campus wide understanding of the diversity of cultures in Southeast Asia.
Social Issues
Spring 2008 meeting time: Mondays @ 6:30pm, Bottom floor of the Student Union
This committee plays an important role to promote awareness about social and political affairs in Southeast Asian nations. This committee has previously organized seminars led by students and visiting experts on Southeast Asia. This year we hope to expand our outreach by working in conjunction with the Carolina Asia Center and other campus organizations.
