SEAIA is an officially recognized UNC-CH organization deciated to enhancing the understanding of social, cultural, and economic issues relating the Southeast Asian region within the local community as well as to raise funds for humanitarian and educational efforts that affect Southeast Asian nations. Any officially enrolled undergraduate or graduate student, as well as any faculty or staff member with an interest in Southeast Asia is welcome to join our organization.
Southeast Asia is a geographic region east of the Indian subcontinent and south of China that is home to about 600 million ethnically, religiously, and linguistically diverse people. Culturally, the region's eleven countries have been influenced significantly by their two large neighbors, yet there is not one definition that characterizes the people of Southeast Asia, nor is there a single definition that describes the polities of the region. Southeast Asian nations range from secular to Islamic, developing to industrialized, authoritarian to democratic.
